DE PERE, WIS. – De Pere Fire Chief Alan Matzke has provided a public update regarding the status of 100 South Broadway, which suffered a catastrophic fire the night of April 24.

“The investigation is concluded. The official cause will be undetermined,” Matzke said. “We know the fire started on the main floor of the address, 100 South Broadway, however, we are unable to determine the exact cause. The dollar loss is still being calculated. There’s no total amount at this time.

“The next phase will be the clean-up phase. It is the responsibility of the building owner to begin the process of clean-up, which we suspect will begin to happen in the next couple weeks.”

During the overnight hours of April 24, an emergency call for 100 South Broadway on downtown De Pere’s east side came in at 12:30 a.m. De Pere Fire Rescue responded and found heavy smoke on the first floor at Ogan Restaurant. A devastating fire ensued, and De Pere Fire Rescue was aided in fighting the blaze by many neighboring agencies, with 80 plus firefighters assisting with the fire.

The building – which is more than 100 years old – was a total loss.

Fortunately, all individuals who lived in the second floor apartments were safely evacuated from the building, as well as all pets who were housed in the building as well.
